Universal Decimal Classification (UDC)

The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is a comprehensive bibliographic and library classification system developed in the late 19th century by Belgian bibliographers Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine. It is an expansion of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system and is designed to organize all branches of human knowledge into a coherent, interconnected framework. UDC employs a decimal notation system combined with symbols and numbers, allowing for detailed and flexible classification of subjects across various disciplines.

UDC is widely used in libraries, museums, and research institutions worldwide, supporting the organization of materials in over 50 languages. Its analytico-synthetic structure enables both the decomposition of complex subjects into their components and the combination of multiple facets to create nuanced classifications.
