Right to Information Act & IT Act – Key Features, Sections & LIS Relevance




📘 Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005

The RTI Act is a landmark legislation passed in 2005 that empowers Indian citizens to access information from public authorities, enhancing transparency and accountability in governance.


✅ Key Features:

  • Applies to: All public authorities, including government departments and funded institutions
  • Right to: Inspect documents, request copies, obtain electronic data
  • Timeline: Within 30 days (48 hours in life or liberty cases)
  • Authorities: PIOs, Appellate Officers, Information Commissions
  • Exemptions: Information affecting national security, privacy, or protected under other laws

💻 Information Technology Act, 2000

The IT Act, 2000 provides legal recognition to electronic transactions, digital signatures, and regulates cyber activities across India. It is crucial for secure e-governance and cyber law enforcement.


✅ Objectives:

  • Enable legal use of digital documents and contracts
  • Prevent and penalize cybercrimes like hacking, identity theft, and fraud
