National Knowledge Commission & National Mission on Libraries

The National Knowledge Commission (NKC) and the National Mission on Libraries (NML) are two landmark initiatives by the Government of India aimed at strengthening the knowledge infrastructure of the country. 📘 National Knowledge Commission (NKC)

Established in 2005, the National Knowledge Commission was an advisory body to the Prime Minister of India. Its objective was to transform India into a knowledge-based society by reforming education, research, and information access mechanisms.

  • Create a national network of knowledge institutions

  • Establish a National Commission on Libraries

📖 National Mission on Libraries (NML)

1. Background

The National Mission on Libraries was launched in 2014 by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, based on NKC's recommendations. Its goal is to modernize and digitally connect thousands of libraries across India.


2. Main Objectives

  • Upgrade existing public libraries into knowledge centers
  • Develop a National Virtual Library of India (NVLI)
  • Provide library training and capacity building for staff
  • Create a unified catalog and digitization platform

3. Key Initiatives

  • National Virtual Library of India (NVLI): A multilingual digital platform for access to knowledge resources
  • Library Upgradation: Around 35 public libraries selected for upgradation in Phase I
  • Capacity Building: Training programs for library professionals and paraprofessionals
